One of the largest pitfalls in building a home based business is building a busyness not a business. What we fill our time with dictates our results in business, so being busy vs. being productive are two different things and you need to learn to be productive.

Have a Start-up Plan

Having a plan to start your business is an important step. Here are a few guidelines to get you started on having your own plan. Having a plan means you have thought about the business and when asked certain kinds of questions by potential clients or customers you will be able to answer them.
  • Do a personal mission statement. Answer these questions: Why should this business exist? Does it provide a product or service that people need or want? Who will be its customers? Why will they be better off?

  • Do the math. Estimate how many potential customers the business will have. Define the traits that will make somebody a potential customer. Where do those customers now purchase, if at all?

  • Ask yourself why you want are wanting to be in business? What motivated you? Make a list of answers that apply to you. Now think of other reasons that other people might have.
