E-Mail Marketing - Overview

Without a doubt, one of the more important aspects of network marketing is the much maligned e-mail – the thing people love to hate that often comes in the form of spam. Hesitant to try this kind of marketing for fear that people will delete your e-mail?

Well, they might no matter what you do, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do this type of marketing. Targeted e-mail marketing is one of the most powerful marketing tools available if done correctly. A well defined e-mail strategy is a feather in your arsenal, and, the foundation for relationship marketing.

You can achieve outstanding results with email marketing while investing only a small amount of time and an even smaller amount of money. E-mail marketing is inexpensive and what better way to market on a shoe-string budget? There’s no production, materials or postage costs, and, it’s 20 times more cost effective than direct mail.

The major selling point about e-mail marketing is you are proactively talking to your existing FOL team members and prospects. You’re not sitting there waiting for them to come back to your web site. It’s also IMMEDIATE communication.

Your call to action is clear: "Click here to take advantage of this offer", or "to learn more about this service". Generally speaking responses to this type of e-mail occur within 48 hours of being sent.


Types of E-Mails and Examples

“Opt-In” E-mail

"Opt-In" direct e-mail is sending e-mail to recipients that HAVE approved of commercial e-mail. Translation: they’ve agreed to receive (opted in) offers like yours. Yes you can pay for a service like this, but why would you when you can write your own “opt-in” style e-mail.

Promotional Postcard

Postcards are efficient, easy-to-create powerful marketing tools and are useful for customer up sells and cross sells, direct purchase, lead generation and brand awareness. An effective postcard email will usually do the trick with after you’ve done your relationship marketing. Is some cases, but not all, a postcard email promotes an event.

Promotional Catalogue

A promotional catalogue email is one that literally contains your “catalogue” of products and, since we’re talking about FOL, it would contain all your business opportunities, which is your product.

Before you write this kind of e mail, you need to know how to match your competition (if you have any – and if you don’t – BONUS point to be emphasized) or beat them. What does FOL have others don’t? ie team support, training, a 30 day program, and four low cost businesses. Pretty hard to beat that kind of offer. Pretty easy to tell others how FOL could benefit them.

Also consider if your “competition” per se might have something you think you can not compete against. You need to know these things so you don’t “step in it” if you honestly can’t offer something the other guys are offering.


Relationship Prospecting

This one is pretty straight forward and is based on the fact that you have already built a relationship with your prospect – it’s someone you know and think would be a good team member for FOL. You’ll provide them with the information they need to become informed about FOL, and enough information that allows them to make an informed decision about joining.

It doesn’t have to be any more than about 400 words, but it must contain at least 3 calls to action – and – the same call to action. Translation: ask them to visit a particular page of your FOL site three times, not different pages every time you ask them to do something. Why? Too confusing for them. Stick to the basics and make sure you have that covered thoroughly.

This style of email should have at least three calls to action in it – and that would be relating to asking them to visit your FOL team site. Try for one PS, but ideally two (the second being a PSS) and make that PSS the third call to action. Here's the example

Hi Joe, I'd be happy to show you what we do to help others build their current business and create secondary incomes. I believe if you take a good hard look at what we do, you’ll want to be a part of it.

Every person who joins our team is given the tools, knowledge and support needed to build a residual income for the long term. They’re put into a position to succeed. Our team members break down the process of building residual income into very simple, duplicatable procedures that anyone can do. This will allow YOU to build an income that grows from month to month.

Three things explain our business plan...

One: Focus your efforts. Have a central "business" to recommend – ie GDI or Hot Conference. You have to be able to say, "This is the best thing and what I personally recommend."

Two: Most "new businesses" fail, which means you have no safety net. There’s also no way to know which ones will fail or succeed.

These two things are in direct conflict. On one hand, you have to focus your efforts and on the other, you don't want to build an income through a business only to start over when that business fails.

The next category of email marketing is the Relationship Informative arena. This is something usually used in newsletters and ezines. You’ve seen them – the large one page “infomercials” if you will, that don’t ask anyone to buy anything – they just provide information.

Now, having said that, you need to be very careful you don’t “step in it” and come across as the Merry Internet Marketer. Your goal is to merely provide information in – dare we say it – an informational manner. Usually in about 1,500 words give or take.

Here’s what we mean by watch your step when you use this kind of email, and make sure it’s well written etc. Studies show e-newsletters that are informative, convenient, and timely are preferred. However, a new study shows only 11% of newsletters are read thoroughly.

Lesson is? Layout and content are critical. Readers are highly critical of newsletters that waste their time, and will ignore or delete newsletters that aren’t perceived as useful. Since your whole reason for marketing is to retain customers, this is a skill you NEED to master.

Although this is a long lesson, it’s packed with valuable information. Daunting? Yes, however, FOL is here to not only lead and support you, but to teach you how to write messages like the ones you read in this lesson. You only have to ask for help, and you will receive it.
